A celebration of life for the late Chicago advocate Roman Buenrostro will take place Tuesday, Oct. 5, 3-6 p.m., at Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn St.

Buenrostro was an LGBTQ- and HIV/AIDS-rights activist who passed away March 25 at age 54. He was a co-founder of the Association of Latina/o/x Motivating Action (ALMA).

Buenrostro’s activism began as a STOP AIDS Chicago volunteer in 1989, educating the community about HIV/AIDS prevention. He also co-founded the Association of Latino/as Motivating Action (ALMA) that same year. One of Buenrostro’s focuses at ALMA was campaigns that focused on communities most impacted by HIV.

In 2016, he was inducted into Chicago’s LGBT Hall of Fame. Other accolades included the Health Resources and Service Administration’s Part-A-Hank Carde Award in 2000 as well as a commendation from Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot in 2019.

NOTE: Due to COVID precautions, there will not be food or drink served. Also, guests will be required to wear masks.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, friends and family are collecting donations to Howard Brown Health Center in an effort to name a room in Buenrostro’s honor. See http://app.mobilecause.com/form/TlbYsw?vid=l78f6.
