“When I Am Free: A Benefit Concert for Rainbow Railroad” will take place at Center on Halsted’s Hoover-Leppen Theatre, 3656 N. Halsted St., on Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m.
During this event, there will be classical music performed by young artists sharing both their musical virtuosity and the passion of their own migration experience, all in support of Rainbow Railroad. Among the performances is a new work by acclaimed local composer Gonzalez that will be based on the true story of two young gay Egyptian men who Rainbow Railroad assisted.
“When I Am Free” is the premier event of Rainbow Railroad’s annual Chicago Five Lives Campaign—the organization’s end-of-year effort to raise $50,000 to save the lives of at least five LGBTQI+ individuals fleeing violence and persecution.
Participants are slated to include violinists Julimar Gonzalez and Gabriela Lara; the Soto String Quartet; composer Carlos Jaquez Gonzalez; director/choreographer Kosta Karakashyan; and the Momentum Chamber Orchestra.
