A GoFundMe page for Lake in the Hills venue UpRising Bakery and Cafe—an LGBTQ+-owned site that was the subject of protests and vandalism after planning to host a family-friendly drag show that was later canceled—has raised thousands of dollars.

As of July 25, the page had surpassed its $5,000 goal, earning more than $10,000.

Megan Rose created the page after learning what had happened to UpRising over the weekend. (The bakery has since reopened.)

“I am openly proud, gay and the happiest I have ever been living with my girlfriend in this quaint little suburb of Chicago,” Rose states on the page. “I have absolutely no affiliation with UpRising—just a patron who is sick and tired of injustice and wants to lend a helping hand.”
