The Portland Thorns became NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) champions after a 2-0 win over the Kansas City Current at D.C.’s Audi Field on Oct. 29, NWSL Soccer reported.
Portland opened the scoring after just four minutes when league MVP and lethal forward Sophia Smith put the Thorns in front after a defensive slip-up by Kansas City. The Thorns would then add its second goal of the night thanks to an Addisyn Merrick own-goal in the 56th minute.
The Thorns are now the most decorated team in the NWSL with their third NWSL championship; they earned their others in 2013 and 2017.
The Chicago Red Stars’ seventh consecutive playoff campaign came to an early end after a 2-1 overtime loss to San Diego Wave FC in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs on Oct. 16.
