Lez Get Together, a community event for sapphic-identifying people who want to gather in an alcohol-free space is hosting a “sober sapphic mixer,” its third social gathering, on April 15 from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
Founder Daniella Cabada said that her objective for the event is “literally to form community” and help people build connections in a sober space.
The mixer is aimed at people age-18 and older “but we don’t want it to stay ‘young,'” Cabada said. “We aspire for it to be intergenerational. At our last event, we had people ranging from in their late -teens to their early fifties.”
Cabada uses the term “sapphic” to describe the focus of Lez Get Together’s prospective audience, and explained that it is more inclusive than the terms “lesbian” and “bisexual,” extending “the community to include non-binary people who are attracted to other women.”
Games, entertainment and non-alcoholic mocktails will all be on hand April 15 to help break the ice.
“I know it can be daunting to come into a sober-space, because the queer community has a lot of parties and events with alcohol, which kind of eases socialization,” said Cabada.
She hopes she’ll be able to keep Lez Get Together growing. The first social event last February brought in about 150 people. Cabada also led two yoga classes in early April that collectively had over two dozen participants.
“My plan is to hold [both] big and more intimate events,” Cabada said, adding that she was appreciative of a sponsorship from Feeld, an online dating app. That sponsorship, she explained, allowed Lez Get Together to provide free tickets for interested participants who might not afford the event otherwise.
“Overall I feel like Feeld’s decision to collaborate with us really helps us to expand our reach in ways we can’t do without a sponsorship,” Cabada said. “…I hope the sponsorship with Feeld is a stepping stone for more sponsorships in the future.”
