An Illinois resident was arrested after Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace said she was attacked in the Capitol by an activist upset over a bill she introduced aimed at blocking the chamber’s first openly transgender member (U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride) from using women’s bathrooms, according to U.S News & World Report.
The Capitol Police said they arrested James McIntyre, 33, of Illinois in the Rayburn House office building after Mace’s report. McIntyre—who went through the building’s security screening—has been charged with assaulting a government official.
“I was physically accosted at the Capitol tonight by a pro-tr*ns man,” Mace posted on X. “The Capitol police arrested the guy. Your tr*ns violence and threats on my life will only make me double down. FAFO. #HoldTheLine.” Authorities have not confirmed whether the suspect was an advocate of transgender rights, Newsweek noted.
Mace proposed the measure after the United States elected McBride, who will represent Delaware’s at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives starting next month.
