Taylor Swift has released her 10th studio album, Midnights, which she announced while accepting the trophy for Video of the Year at MTV’s Video Music Awards in August, Pitchfork reported.
In addition to the Lana Del Rey collaboration “Snow on the Beach,” Midnights features production and instrumentation from Swift’s longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff.
However, three hours after releasing Midnights overnight, Swift unveiled the “special very chaotic surprise” she had promised: a “3AM Edition” of the album featuring seven songs made “on the journey” to the proper album.
Midnights—which features songs such as “Maroon,” “Lavender Haze,” “Karma,” “Vigilante Shit” and “You’re on Your Own, Kid”—notably features contributions from, among others, Del Rey, Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern, HAIM, Dita von Teese and Swift’s boyfriend, Joe Alwyn (under his pseudonym, William Bowery).
The album has gotten mostly glowing reviews. NME gave it four out of five stars, stating, in part, “She spins these new stories through sleek synth-pop, in common with ‘1989’ or ‘Lover,’ but the razor-sharp production of these albums is more subtle this time around. If the aforementioned is the album stuck on for pre-drinks before going out-out, ‘Midnights’ is what plays in the rideshare home, city lights swirling past when the night is winding down but you’re on the hunt for the afters.”
