On Jan. 3, Nancy Pelosi was narrowly re-elected speaker of the U.S. House, as she again leads the Democrats’ slender majority, media outlets reported.
After serving for 17 years in charge of the House Democrats, Pelosi ran unopposed in her election. She is the first woman to be speaker, leading the House 2006-11, and since the Democrats took back the House in 2018. She received 216 votes to 209 for Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-California, who again will be the chamber’s minority leader.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, formally nominated Pelosi for the job, calling her “a notorious negotiator and a legendary legislator for such a time as this,” according to The Chicago Tribune.
http://CNN.com noted that only two House Democrats—U.S. Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Connor Lamb of Pennsylvania —supported someone else, respectively voting for Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth and Jeffries.
