On July 27, a festive crowd gathered in Evanston’s Ridgeville Park for the fourth annual Pride Community Picnic. This family-friendly event–organized by Evanston Pride featured food, vendors, informational booths and an opportunity to meet other LGBTQ+ folks. Entertainment was provided by THEM queers, Kai on the Keys, and Firebrand.

The event was attended by several elected officials who proclaimed their support for the LBGTQ+ community.

“Today we can be who we want to be, love who we want to love, and celebrate the way we want to celebrate,” said State Senator Laura Fine (D-9th).

“This is a great example of how our community is so open and inclusive,” said Evanston City Councilmember Juan Geracaris (9th Ward).

They were joined on stage by State Representative Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz (D-17th) and Cook County Commissioner (13th District) Josina Morita.

Community members also expressed their support for the event. “It’s nice to see Evanston showing up like this,” said Jenny Heckathorne, a Board member for the Evanston Chapter of PFLAG.

Kristine Binder, the State of Illinois chapter leader for Free Mom Hugs, remarked the picnic was an opportunity to increase visibility and offer hugs to all. “I can’t tell you how many people have cried or not let go,” Binder remarked. “There are so many stories.”

The most colorful attendee was perhaps Christian Lopez, who dressed as a pumpkin to promote the October Cafe. This fall-themed cafe was opened a year ago in Norwood by Audrey Borden and her wife, Michelle Gonzalez.

Towards the end of the event, Firebrand, the performance troupe of the Second City Country Dance Association (SCCDA), provided free line dancing lessons.

Evanston Pride donates 20% of their annual funds raised to local community organizations that support solidarity efforts.

This year, the Evanston Anti-Racist AF and The Evanston Community Fridges were the proud recipients of these awards.
