Hailing from Drogheda, Ireland, McCague’s journey is one of transformation. Dwarfism is a rare condition and Laoch offers a look into the daily life of a little person (LP). Tommy’s fitness journey began as he battled depression and obesity. Powerlifting saved his life. The film follows Tommy to Limerick and Manchester, where he competes in the bench press event against average statured lifters. In Germany, he competes in the 2023 World Dwarf Games with other LP athletes. Tommy battles health challenges, shatters societal expectations, and breaks world records.

Director Stephan Mazurek emphasizes the film’s universal message:

“At a time when public discourse can be divisive, it is more important than ever to uplift stories that promote inclusivity and understanding. Films like Laoch: Defy the Odds play a crucial role in shaping positive narratives about underrepresented communities, including women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals with disabilities. By sharing authentic and empowering stories, we can build empathy, encourage meaningful conversations, and strengthen our collective humanity.”

Laoch: Defy the Odds had its world premiere at the 2024 Galway Film Fleadh (Ireland). It has since won the Best of Louth and the Audience Choice Award at the Louth International Film Festival. The Chicago Irish Film Festival premiere will feature an in person Q&A post-screening with McCague, Mazurek, and Liz Sung (producer/editor).
