Dance for Life—the annual terpsichorean event that raises awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS care, prevention and education—will be held Aug. 18 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph.
Realizing that AIDS had heavily affected the dance community, Dance for Life was founded in 1992 by Keith Elliott as an inventive way for dancers and dance companies, whose incomes do not normally allow for large donations, to be able to seriously contribute time, effort and badly needed funds for existing AIDS agencies.
Among the dance companies scheduled to appear are chiBAM!, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, The Joffrey Ballet, Luna Negra Dance Theater and the River North Chicago Dance Company. This year’s beneficiaries are AIDS Foundation of Chicago, AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, Centro San Bonifacio, Pediatric AIDS Chicago and The Dance for Life Fund.
There will be a light buffet reception at 5 p.m., and the performances will commence at 7:30 p.m. WGN-TV and WGN Radio 720 AM personality Dean Richards will host the event.
Tickets are $75-$500. See www.danceforlifechicago.com/tickets.html.
