Between the world wars, German homosexuals lived relatively openly within a free-spirited, intellectual environment. Berlin’s colorful nightlife was known worldwide, and gay men and women found that the spirit of tolerance made Germany’s capital city a magnet for international personalities in the arts and culture. But when the Nazis came to power, everything changed. Narrated by Rupert Everett, HBO’s PARAGRAPH 175 explores the stories of homosexuals who experienced persecution under the Nazis when it debuts this week (check listings). PARAGRAPH 175 combines recent interviews with six of the nine known survivors, some speaking publicly for the first time, and a wealth of archival and personal photographs and film footage taken before and during the war. Adding another grim chapter to the brutal Nazi legacy, the film shows how Hitler changed his laissez-faire policy towards the homosexual culture that flourished in Berlin during the Weimar years by making scapegoats of gays, who often met the same fate as the millions of Jews who were eliminated in the Final Solution.
