Pete Biej Hoagland

Peter Biej Hagland, 68, life partner of Milton M. Hoeksema, has died. He is also survived by brother Donald Hoagland of North Carolina, and nephews Steve, Gary and Brian, and grand niece and nephew Rachel and Donald. Arrangements were by the Cremation Society of Illinois, (773) 281-5058, and a memorial was May 12 at the Olson Burke-Sullivan Funeral Home, 6471 N. Northwest Hwy.

Rev. Lewis E. Durham of Ukiah, Calif., died April 18. From 1962 to 1972 he was President of Glide Foundation and Executive

Minister of Glide Memorial Methodist Church. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that “In this position he played an important role in the 1960’s gay movement in San Francisco, helping to organize the defense of the first public gay event in San Francisco (the 1964 New Years eve drag ball at California Hall). In 1972 he left Glide to help found a commune in the Mission District on San Jose Street. He helped found the Black Bart and Briar Patch movements.”
