The Rev. Fred Phelps from Kansas was due in town earlier this month to protest Crete-Monee High School’s decision to vote two girls ‘cutest couple’ in their high school yearbook. When the day came for Phelps to protest, he was a no show. Students who talked to Windy City Times that day said they were supportive of the girls and the vote and were prepared to stand up against the Phelps protest. Many students honked horns in approval and held up rainbow items to members of the gay congregation of the Park Forest Unitarian Church who stood out front of the school to support the students’ decision.
More than 400 students reportedly were not expected in school that day because of their parents’ non-support or fear of the protests.
