Obsessive love is the stuff of soap opera, but the soaps have nothing on 17th Century French dramatist Jean Racine’s take on the Greeks. Take Phedra. Y’see, she has the hots for her stepson, so she accuses him of rape. Dad curses his son and asks Neptune to destroy him, which he does, then Dad finds out the truth and she poisons herself. Or take Andromache. Y’see, Orestes loves Hermione who loves Pyrrhus who loves the widow Andromache. So Pyrrhus jilts Hermione and forces Andromache to marry him. So Hermione has Orestes kill Pyrrhus and then kills herself. The crazy-brave kids of Keyhole Theatre Company offer Phedra and Andromache in rotating rep through March 14 at the Josephinum, 1501 N. Oakley; (773) 412-3478; $12. Pay your money and choose your blood curse. PICTURED: Don Johnson and Mary Bliss in Phedra.
