I Never Sang For My Father, Steppenwolf, through June 26. Soapsuds are minimized in Robert Anderson’s hankie-wringer for men, thanks to director Anna D. Shapiro’s restraint and a cast of ‘wolf alums led by John Mahoney (now liberated from TV land). (Barnidge)

Le Livre Blanc, The Journeymen at Gerber/Hart Library, through July 17. Discrete homo-eroticism suffuses Jean Cocteau’s pyscho-sexual history of a young man’s coming of age and search for love, with Cocteau’s not-so-discrete drawings as scenery. (Abarbanel)

The Romance of Magno Rubio, Victory Gardens Theater, through July 11. Creator Lonnie Carter calls it ‘Manila Rap.’ I call this lyrical story of 1930’s Filipino migrants and their endurance brilliant. In English (mostly), Tagalog and uno poquito Spanish. (Reed)

Strong Poison, Lifeline Theatre, through Aug. 15. Every summer Lifeline seems to score with a delightful winner of a show just perfect for warm-weather viewing. Again this year, it’s a Lord Peter Whimsey mystery, tailor-made for actor Peter Greenberg. (Abarbanel)
