Georgie ‘Gigi’ Nicks, patient adovcate at the CORE Center, passed away Aug. 19 of a heart attack.
‘I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with her on a number of projects and will miss her very, very much. Every time she spoke at a public event, it was like going to church in the best of ways. She excited me and she inspired me as she tore the roof off of wherever we happened to be,’ said AIDS activist Jim Pickett.
Funeral is Saturday, Aug. 28, Rock of Ages Baptist Church, 1309 Madison St., Maywood; 10-11 a.m., wake 11-12 services.
‘GiGi was a dear friend, colleague, WIHS participant, mother, sister, NCAB member and community advocate,’ said CORE Center’s Mardge Cohen. ‘GiGi’s contributions to the WIHS and to the HIV/AIDS community at the CORE Center, in the city of Chicago, and nationally through the AIDS Alliance are far-reaching. As many of us know, GiGi was a passionate and outspoken advocate for people living with HIV. She was strong and loud and determined to live a healthy and productive life as she courageously fought her own HIV, and moved others to do the same. She had a booming voice and a fearless spirit. She was truly a mentor and a role model for many of us. It is hard to imagine continuing our work without her. We will miss her tremendously.’
