Indiana Equality (IE), in a statement, lauded Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson for his decision to include gender identity in the non-discrimination policy protecting city workers.
According to group president Kathy Sarris, the mayor’s decision represents ‘one more important step in our state’s recognition that transgender people are valued friends, neighbors, spouses and family members as well as productive contributors to our economy.’
IE is a coalition of several statewide, regional and local organizations whose primary objective is to expand Indiana’s civil-rights protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity. The coalition is also taking action in opposing the pro-traditional marriage amendment to its state constitution. See www.indianaequality.org.
