Homobilia.com features a wide array of one-of-a-kind art and memorabilia of the queer past. Their collection includes sought-after vintage erotica; ephemera like real photo postcards and vintage advertising; and exceptional photography including Karoll of Havana and Crawford Barton’s ‘Gay Awakening: San Francisco in the 1970’s.’
No rainbow flag key-chains here. The soft tones, seductive images and heartfelt content throughout the site set the tone for an artful online experience with the discerning shopper in mind.
But that doesn’t mean the prices are prohibitive. Homobilia.com sells everything from $12 frame-worthy real photo postcards to rare 1930s British physique photography. The site isn’t just a one-stop-queer-art online shop; Homobilia.com also offers a historical and cultural context for the items they sell.
Barry Harrison, one of the partners in Homobilia.com (and the founder of Queer Arts Resource in ’96; www.queer-arts.org), explains: ‘The artifacts we call Homobilia survived against all efforts to deny and suppress them. We cherish these rare old photographs, magazines, books and postcards. They’re relics of our underground story; of hidden stashes and secret networks. And they still resonate with us because they connect us to the timeless truth of same-sex desire.’
Throughout this holiday season visitors can view a special exhibit: ‘Men In And Out of Uniform,’ Homobilia’s tribute to men in the military—be they gay, straight, or whatever.
