Because clubs featuring drag queens and kings are classified as adult entertainment cabarets, the venues are in the same category as topless bars and strip clubs—and are subject to the same zoning laws.
Ald. Tom Tunney of the 44th Ward has introduced an amendment to the zoning law at the behest of The Baton Show Lounge, located at 436 N. Clark.
The current zoning law places venues like The Baton under rigorous guidelines regarding where they can be.
Currently, such clubs may not be be within 1,000 feet of churches, schools and other buildings.
Under the alderman’s proposal, the words ‘male or female impersonators’ would no longer be used.
