Richard Alan Smith, a furniture designer and owner of Michael Gary Furniture, passed away May 5 following a brief illness. He was 57.

Born Dec. 21, 1948 in Muskegon, Mich., Smith attended Western Michigan University and loved boating, travel and entertaining. He established Michael Gary, Inc., a specialty residential furniture company located in Lakeview. Customers and vendors alike considered their association with Richard one that transcended business.

Smith is survived by life partner of 18 years, Bruce Ives; his mother, Donna (Ned) Krohn; brother James Smith; uncles Ronald and Bob Kanaar; cousins Tom, Greg and Gary Kanaar; and numerous friends. (His father is the late Joseph Smith.)

Patricia Ann (‘Pat’) Carrara

Patricia Ann (‘Pat’) Carrara passed away on May 12. She was 57.

Carrara was a huge supporter of and volunteer for the LCCP (Lesbian Community Cancer Project), the arts and the community. She was also quite the sports fan, who obsessively followed the Chicago White Sox. She also bowled and participated in softball events around the city.

She was the daughter of the late Mario and Rose. She is survived by sister Marion (Frank) Moscardini; nephew Frank Jr. (Pattie) Moscardini; nieces Maria Moscardini and Alicia (James) Balonek; great-nieces and great-nephews Nadia, Ryan, Jake, Michael, Lucas and Hannah Rose; and numerous friends. A funeral was held May 15 at the Belmont Funeral Home, 7120 W. Belmont.
