The only possible choice for this week’s Spotlight is Patti LuPone as Mama Rose in the big concert staging of Gypsy at the Ravinia Festival, Fri.-Sun., Aug. 11-13. At press time, pavilion tickets (that’s seats vs. the lawn) still were available for all three nights. Dating from 1959, Gypsy has lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, who was then a budding boy not yet composing his own music. Now 76, Sondheim will make a pre-concert appearance at 6:45p.m. on Aug. 11 only. Sondheim’s longtime musical associate, Paul Gemignani, will conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Jule Styne’s quintessential Broadway score. Mama Rose is an astonishing role that LuPone seems born to play. 847-266-5100; $50 & $90.
