Victory Gardens Theater will inaugurate its new, $11.3-million main stage in Chicago’s historic Biograph Theater with Denmark, a provocative world premiere drama that is based on the controversial life of freed slave Denmark Vesey.

Anthony Fleming III plays Vesey, who used his earnings to build a church for the slave community of Charleston, S.C., and plan an uprising intended to liberate all of the city’s African slaves.

Previews begin Sept. 29 and performances run through Nov. 12 at the new Victory Gardens Theater at the Biograph, 2433 N. Lincoln. Tickets are $20-$45. Call 773-871-3000 for tickets and info, or buy tickets online at www.victorygardens.org.
