Colette’s coming-of-age tale of a young high society courtesan, Gigi, was cleaned up for the lavish 1958 musical film from which this stage version is taken. They made Gigi a nice girl instead of a good girl. Ah, well, it’s still a delight. Who can resist the rich score by Alan Jay Lerner (words) and Frederick Loewe (music) ? As staged by Light Opera Works, you can be sure that ‘The Night They Invented Champagne,’ and ‘Say a Prayer for Me Tonight,’ and ‘I’m Glad I’m Not Young Any More’ and ‘Thank Heaven for Little Girls’ all will be beautifully sung and lushly accompanied by a full orchestra. Gigi plays through June 15 only; Light Opera Works at Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson, Evanston; 847-869-6300; $29-$85. Image by Ocken Photography
