Out and award-winning playwright Doug Wright certainly loves eccentric characters. After all, he created theatrically complex biographical portraits of an East German transvestite in I Am My Own Wife and the mother-daughter Beale team living in nostalgic squalor in the musical Grey Gardens. But it was Wright’s dramatization of the final days of the sadistic Marquis de Sade in Quills that first put him on the map off-Broadway, then in Hollywood. The Shadowmen perform Quills 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays until Nov. 1 at the Trap Door Theater, 1655 W. Cortland. Tickets are $16; visit www.shadowmenchicago.com.
