The Light in the Piazza, Marriott Theatre, through Sept. 20. The massive Italian scenery may be missing, but this sophisticated 2005 musical by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas benefits from being in such close proximity to the super-talented cast. SCM
Moonshiner, Jackalope Theatre at EP Theater, through Aug. 30. A lean production budget can’t disguise the surprisingly mature artistic proficiency reflected in this drama of American Realism by a deceptively young Chicago author. MSB
Road, Ka-Tet Theatre at Stage Left, through Aug. 29. A new, young troupe debuts with stunning ensemble work in this look at a 1980s Northern England industrial town on the skids. It’s a somewhat-pointless ramble of drink, sex and music—but very entertaining. JA
Sodomites!!! A Musical of Biblical Proportions, Annoyance Theatre, through Sept. 11. A charmingly sacrilegious show that sharply (and hilariously) questions why an arcane and bizarre biblical story holds so much sway in justifying discrimination against the LGTBQ community.
