A new, nonprofit film group comprised of LGBT film critics, academics, historians and authors called the Queer Film Society (QFS) has formed.
The group was created by Windy City Times/Knight at the Movies film critic Richard Knight, Jr. “Members of the gay community have been at the forefront of film criticism, film academia, film history, etc. for decades,” said Knight, “Yet, with so many openly queer members of our profession, I wasn’t able to find a single organization celebrating this fact when I went looking. The QFS is here to change that. Like other film groups—Women in Film, the Latino Film Society, etc.—the QFS will not only celebrate our queer counterparts but will work to build awareness and appreciation of cinema from the distinctive and diverse perspectives of the LGBT community.”
The QFS is continuing its Monday series, Queer Cinema 102, with Barbarella, Desperate Living and The Lonely Lady. No screening will happen on Monday, Sept. 7 (Labor Day).
All films will begin at 7 p.m in the Hoover-Leppen Theatre at Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door. Openly gay film critics from Chicago’s prominent LGBT publications—Chicago Free Press, Gay Chicago and Windy City Times—as well as from Time Out Chicago—all members of the QFS—will introduce each film in the “Queer Cinema 102” series. Screenings will be followed by Q&A’s with audience members. www.HannahFree.com is helping to sponsor the series.
