The Brother/Sister Plays, Steppenwolf, through May 23. A fresh, original voice—Tarell Alvin McCraney, who is Black and gay—has created a tale both modern and mythological told in a dazzling display of primal theater: music, movement and community story-telling. Don’t miss! JA
Messiah on the Frigidaire, Hubris Productions at Greenhouse Theater Center, through April 17. If you can suspend your vado-retro-deus secularism for a couple of hours, you just might enjoy this affectionate examination of mystical visions visited on pilgrims most in need of heavenly counsel (or debate whether Jesus looks like Willie Nelson). MSB
The Twins Would Like to Say, Dog & Pony Theatre Company at Steppenwolf Theatre Garage, through April 25. Seth Bockley and Devon de Mayo’s compelling based-upon-a-true story about alienated twin girls who make a pact to communicate only with each other is made all the more mysterious and entertaining via a promenade-style staging. Trust, Lookingglass Theatre. Call it a movie of the week if you must. Allison Torem and Philip R. Smith absolutely kill it as, respectively, the 14-year-old target of a pedophile and her vengeance-obsessed father. The drama should be a must-see for any teen with Internet privileges. CS
