After 17 years serving the Chicago community, the Aldo Castillo Gallery is scheduled to close on Aug. 28, according to a press release from the gallery. Director Aldo Castillo has accepted the role of associate director at the Miami International Art Fair.
The gallery will be reborn as www.artaldo.com, a virtual showcase of contemporary and modern art by established worldwide artists. (The gallery’s current exhibits can currently be seen at the same site.)
An openly gay and openly HIV-positive human-rights activist and artist, Castillo was born in Nicaragua. After studying in Guatemala City and Lima, Peru, he came to the United States in 1985 on a scholarship from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1993, he opened the award-winning Aldo Castillo Gallery, which specializes in Latin American art. In 2007, Castillo—who has organized more than 250 exhibitions globally—organized Chicago ARTEahora, the only Chicago Latin American Art Fair.
The Aldo Castillo Gallery is at 675 N. Franklin; the phone is 312-337-2536.
