The Illinois Gender Advocates (IGA) announced today that June Latrobe has been appointed as its Public Policy Director. In this newly created position, Ms. Latrobe will advocate on behalf of all Trans and gender variant citizens of Illinois.

“A life-long Chicagoan” Latrobe has been a high-profile activist for all members of the broad LGBT community. In “the last 4 years” Latrobe has helped local sexual-minority rights organizations to reach new levels of visibility and credibility.

She has forged alliances with organizations such as “Equality Illinois”, Center on Halsted, Gay Liberation Network, and the Chicago Chapter of the veteran’s group, Americans for Equal Rights while persistently seeking passage of local, state, and national laws to prohibit discrimination because of sexual orientation, as well as Gender Identity and Expression.

Latrobe has developed a comprehensive array of Trans-focused social, support and advocacy programs at Center on Halsted, including a personalized program for assisting individuals in getting their name and gender marker changed.

Recently, June has lead an effort to improve requirements to have one’s gender marker changed on their Illinois birth certificate.

A member of several LGBT Advisory Councils, she is a consistent and effective voice for the Trans and Gender Variant members of our community. IGA Chair Candice Hart stated that Latrobe was the logic choice to fill this newly created position given her past commitment, dedication and accomplishments in resolving Trans and gender variant issues. She has established long standing professional relationships with elected and appointed local and state officials.
