Falsettos, continuing through June 9 at the Nederlander Theatre, is William Finn and James Lapine’s 1992 landmark gay musical about thirtysomething Marvin. He’s hard to like in Act I, set in 1979 New York. He has money, a smart 10 year old son, a confused but sympathetic ex-wife, a psychiatrist and a horny prettyboy lover. But Marvin is petty, controlling and unhappy and he wants everyone to share his unhappiness. Intermission works wonders! Act II is 1981, and Marvin realizes he must grow up himself as his son prepares for his bar-mitzvah. Marvin’s ex-wife married his shrink and Marvin must accept their happiness, just as something very bad—still nameless—is threatening men like Marvin and his lover. The caring Lesbian couple next door helps him a lot. This national tour of the 2016 Broadway revival is beautifully played, acted and sung; but Falsettos is a chamber musical that should be playing the 550-seat Broadway Playhouse and not the 2400-seat Nederlander.
