The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA) announced that legendary Grammy winner and soul, gospel and R&B artist Mavis Staples will return to Orchestra Hall for a Symphony Center Presents concert on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at 8 p.m. as part of 2022-23 season programming.
Staples—who made her first appearance on the stage at Orchestra Hall in 1998 when she opened for Take Six—will make her sixth appearance and first since 2017.
A Chicago native, Staples began singing with her family, the Staple Singers, from an early age and had hits such as “I’ll Take You There.” A pioneer in blues and rock, she has performed with a diverse range of artists throughout her career, including Prince, Bob Dylan, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Jeff Tweedy and, most recently, Bonnie Raitt at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park.
In addition to her three solo Grammy Awards, Mavis and the Staple Singers were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. A civil-rights icon, Staples performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration and once marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
