On Sept. 13, Pope Francis described the choice U.S. voters must make in the presidential election as one between the “lesser of two evils,” as he said former President Donald Trump’s anti-migrant policies and Vice President Kamala Harris’ pro-abortion life were both being “against life,” CNN reported.
At a press conference, the pontiff stated, “One must choose the lesser of two evils. Who is the lesser of two evils? That lady or that gentleman [referring to Harris and Trump]? I don’t know. Everyone with a conscience should think on this and do it.”
While he has defended the Catholic Church’s teaching that abortion is the deliberate destruction of a human life, Francis has also stressed that it cannot be isolated from other issues connected to human life, including immigration.
The pope has previously discussed political issues, signaling more progressive stances by allowing priests to forgive abortions, authorizing blessings for same-sex couples and warning about climate change.
