Amber Glenn—a member of the LGBTQ+ community—successfully defended her women’s title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Jan. 24 in Wichita, Kansas, according to USA Today.
Glenn—who won last month’s Grand Prix Final in France—sat in third place after the short program the previous night. However, she roared past eventual runner-up Alysa Liu with a long program that featured a triple axel. The winning margin of 1.46 points was the tightest since the current scoring system was instituted in 2006, according to NBC Sports.
Sarah Everhardt, an 18-year-old Virginian, outskated Illinois native Bradie Tennell to earn the bronze medal. Tennell took home the pewter medal.
Glenn became the first U.S. woman to win back-to-back golds since Liu (who was competing at her first U.S. Championships since coming out of retirement) accomplished the feat in 2019 and 2020, per US Figure Skating.
In the men’s section, Ilia Malinin, Andrew Torgashev and Camden Pulkinen finished first, second and third, respectively, as Malinin completed six quad jumps (out of seven planned ones) during his long routine, per the AP. Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the ice-dance competition—their sixth title, tying Meryl Davis and Charlie White; Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov took the pairs title.
